Snow algae is found at the coldest of mountain tops around the globe, thriving particularly in the Alps and coastal polar regions. In winter, in sub-zero temperatures, in areas where few other plants survive, snow algae move to the surface of the snow while producing a red pigment to protect itself from the sun’s UV radiation. This red pigment is also why snow algae has earned its nickname of “watermelon algae.”
